How are you doing? How was your morning?

Ask those questions when you have time and interest to listen to the answers.
And listen means to do so without assumption of why or answers of problem solving.

People need to vent when it's been a lot and they need to express when it is emotional. 

Then ask if one wants advice or a hug.  Then ask how the feeling us now after. 
Never mix up previous feelings with present simply because we're talking about the past

Life moves on even when we talk about what's been
